The 79th PEN International Congress was held in Reykjavik on September 9 - 12, 2013.
More than 200 writers from around the world gathered in Reykjavík on this occasion, having meetings and other events in Harpa, the Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Centre. The theme of the conference was Digital Frontiers: Linguistic Rights and Freedom of Speach.
The Reykjavík International Literary Festival coincided with the congress, as it started on September 12 that year. Furthermore, the Reykjavik UNESCO City of Literature hosted off-venue readings with Icelandic and international authors in connection with these events.
The organizers of the congress in Reykjavík were the Icelandic PEN club, the Reykjavík International Literary Festival and Reykjavík UNESCO City of Literature, in cooperation with PEN International. Icelandic writer Sjón was head of PEN Iceland in 2013.
