Helgi Hálfdanarson (1911 – 2009) completed his translation of the complete plays of Shakespeare in 1991, an ambitious project which began with his translation of As You Like it, published in 1951.
Helgi received the Silver Horse, a literary prize awarded by the Icelandic daily newspapers from 1967-1974, for his translation of Shakespeare in 1970. Although he respectfully declined the award, obeying his personal rule of never accepting prizes.
Helgi was a highly respected and productive translator. Among his translations are The Quran, Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen, the Greek tragedies of Euripides, Sophocles and Aeschylus and the poetry of Horas.
